Moving Day Tips – Expert Advice On Moving House

Moving day

You may have heard before the oft-repeated mantra that moving house is one of the most stressful times of your life. Here at Britannia Harrison & Rowley, experts removals in Bedford and regions, we make it our business to ensure that this isn’t the case.

In fact, we find the notion a little bit dramatic, as with adequate preparation, relocating should be an exciting journey that can be organised to only take a day or two out of your busy schedule.

With that in mind, we decided to mine our years of experience and share our expert tips, tricks and advice on everything you need to remember for the big day itself.

Before the big day…

Choose the appropriate moving company:

  • Ensure your removals company has insurance for any damages or breakages
  • Hire one of the removal companies that is an accredited member of the BAR
  • Ensure the new house is free from asbestos and surveyed – Get asbestos removal with ICE Asbestos

Book wisely and consider space options and storage solutions:

  • Try to book a day that is mid-week. Fridays and bank holiday weekends tend to be busy for moving companies and are sometimes more expensive
  • Make sure there is enough room at your new home for the removals van to park and the packers and movers to unload
  • If you feel you need to store certain items for a time, investigate storage facility options. (Harrison & Rowley have storage units and containers available if you require storage solutions).

Keep your children and pets occupied for the day:

  • See if a relative or close friend can entertain your children for the day to save them (and maybe yourself) from exhaustion
  • Find someone to take care of your pets or if you think you may be tied up for a few days, consider kennels etc. (remember to change and update their identity tags also)

Before packing, rid yourself of as many unwanted items as possible and do your laundry:

  • Consider reducing the amount of unwanted items by utilising charity shops, car boot sales, online auctions, free item sites like Freecycle and as a last resort the local rubbish dump
  • Doing all your laundry before the move ensures your items will not only be packed more easily, but they will also be clean and folded upon arriving in your new home

Create a list for the new owners of your house:

  • Write a list containing useful information for the new owners of your property, including rubbish and recycling removal times and heating and appliance instructions

Packing tips and advice…

You may have heard before the oft-repeated mantra that moving house is one of the most stressful times of your life. Here at Britannia Harrison & Rowley, we make it our business to ensure that this isn’t the case.

In fact, we find the notion a little bit dramatic, as with adequate preparation, relocating should be an exciting journey that can be organised to only take a day or two out of your busy schedule.

Before the big day…

Check everything is in place and in order as agreed:

  • Ensure that all items that have been agreed to be included with the property are included
  • Check that the condition of the property matches the surveyor’s report

Locate and check important utilities and security:

  • Locate the water stopcock in case you have an emergency
  • Read any meters and check all utilities are working
  • Check the alarm is working and consider changing the locks for maximum security

Register your change of address:

  • Notify the following of your new address where applicable: bank, credit card company, loan companies, insurance providers, Inland Revenue, local council regarding council tax, tv licence, utility companies, Post Office, DVLA, vehicle breakdown services, broadband provider, satellite or cable provider, doctor, electoral roll, employer, school and any subscription companies

Unpack the essentials, introduce yourself and celebrate:

  • Unpack the essentials, first starting with the children’s bedrooms and then your own
  • Say hi to your neighbours as soon as possible
  • Order a takeaway and crack open your celebratory beverage of choice!

So, as you can see at Harrison & Rowley, we have the art of relocation down to a T and when you break down the removals process into manageable steps, it really doesn’t need to be that stressful after all and can even be quite fun!
