Moving house mistakes to avoid
Monday, 9th December 2019

There's a lot going on when you move home, and with so much to think about certain areas of the moving house process get overlooked or simply forgotten in the chaos. Here are some common moving house mistakes you should try to avoid.
Secret hoarding
Whether you have lived in your current home for decades or a few years, over this time you will have acquired large collections of magazines, clothing, books, kitchen utensils and more. While some of these items will no doubt be of sentimental value, not everything needs to move to your new house with you adding unnecessary clutter.
To solve this, set some time aside to sort through your house before you start packing items into boxes. There never seems to be a convenient time to declutter your house, but if you identify which items you no longer use and avoid the mistake of cluttering your new home with things you don't need, you'll feel much better when you have the mammoth task of unpack everything.
Last minute organisation
Make sure you remember to carry out important tasks like defrosting your fridge and freezer, organising for a cleaner, disassembling outdoor items, and disconnecting household appliances before moving day. Organise for electricians or plumbers to attend to your appliances in advance, as your movers will not move them.
To help when you have to reassemble devices and electronics in your new home, take photos of the wires which connect the cords and gadgets so you have an idea of what links everything back together. Organising in advance will save you time when you start unpacking in your new home.
Moving with your children
Do you live on a busy road? Will you be worried about where your children are? Or what they're doing? Can you have eyes on them the whole time? If the answers are no, having your children help with moving house will add unnecessary stress. The removal team need a clear path so they can physically move your items without endangering the safety of those around them.
Moving house may also be a stressful experience for your children if they don't understand what is happening, so ensuring your children's safety and removing their stressful, chaotic energy will benefit your state of mind during the move too. Arrange for your children to go stay with a relative or friend while the removal takes place, or hire a sitter if no one is around.
